If you’re maintaining regular chiropractic care – great job! You have made strides in improving your overall health and wellness. But to get the most out of your chiropractic adjustments, you have to take care of your body between visits. Here are our tips.
Stay Hydrated
This one is important no matter what: stay hydrated! The reason you hear so many healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of hydration is because most people just don’t drink enough water. Think about it: your body is made up mostly of water, so it needs water to function and heal properly. This is especially true for the spine, as the spinal discs located between vertebrae are almost entirely made of water. That means hydration effects the movement and health of your entire spine! If you don’t drink enough water, your spine won’t be able to function optimally. Try to consume ½ your body weight in ounces each day. So, if you weight 180 pounds, aim for about 90 ounces of water per day.
Get Moving
Movement is also critical to the health of your spine. If you aren’t moving, your body could suffer from a loss of mobility.
Stretching is a great way to benefit the health of your spine. If you’ve ever had a dog or cat, you probably noticed the first thing they do when they wake up is a big stretch. We could learn from them on that aspect! A simple morning or evening stretch routine of five minutes will start a positive shift for your spinal health. With 10 minutes of daily stretching, you’ll notice a positive shift so you can only imagine what 15 minutes per day will do!
Balance
If you take a moment and think about it, you’ll realize that many of us live unbalanced lives. For some, that means holding prolonged positions, like sitting for long periods of time while working. Long periods of inactivity can wreak havoc on your spine and just because you can sit for a long time doesn’t mean you should. Many people can sit for an extended period of time and not experience symptoms, but that doesn’t make it a healthy choice.
A simple fix is to get up and stretch every 45 minutes or take a walk around the office. If you are unable to do that, simply stand up and do a few minutes of work-friendly stretches, which we’ll be happy to recommend during your next adjustment!
