The holidays are quickly approaching, and for many of us, that means packing up the car and heading out on a holiday road trip. Traveling to celebrate with friends and family can be exciting, but for those suffering from back pain, a road trip can seem daunting. Fortunately, Stiles Chiropractic can help relieve your discomfort so you can enjoy your holiday trip! Here’s how we can help.
Lift with Your Legs!
You know the saying: Lift with your legs, not with your back! Be sure to use proper lifting techniques when packing up the car or you risk back pain during the drive. Bend your knees to bend down, pick up your luggage with both arms while maintaining a straight back, then lift your body by straightening your knees. For especially heavy bags, don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Call Your Co-Captain
Traveling with others is not only more entertaining, but it can also help relieve back pain. Part of the reason driving can lead to back pain is because drivers rarely get to adjust or change positions to find relief from discomfort. Driving with another person will ensure you can take turns driving, which will allow you to sit in the passenger’s seat where you can make adjustments more frequently.
Pit Stop, Anyone?
Oversitting can cause serious back pain, along with other issues. It’s important to stop the car every few hours to stand up, walk around, and stretch your legs and back. Rotate your arms, arch your back, roll your neck, and maybe even do a few jumping jacks. This will help get your blood flowing and keep you feeling great.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids throughout your journey. This will ensure you take frequent breaks and also keeps your joints flexible and lubricated. Proper hydration also helps maintain the discs between the vertebrae of your spine, which will improve your comfort.
