Colic and Chiropractic

Colic is defined as comfortless crying in a young child or a baby and the child exhibits periodic fussiness that can last over hours or days. Colic is characterized by problems of loud piercing cry, tensed abdominal muscles, flexed legs, and clenched fingers. It generally starts around three weeks of age and lasts until around three months but sometimes lasts for as long as six months. Approximately 10-20% of babies are affected by colic.1

There has been plenty of research done, but there is no simple answer and no easy cure. The constant crying that sometimes lasts for hours will leave a parent feeling helpless, fatigued and unsure of what more they can do since nothing has been working.

Many physicians will prescribe either over-the-counter or prescription medication for the baby that typically addresses the colic symptoms, but does not treat the colic itself. Many of these drugs have sad side effects that may leave the baby feeling worse.

There is an alternative solution: Chiropractic care.

Though many parents may be apprehensive of chiropractic care for their baby because chiropractors “crack backs”. The  truth about chiropractic is that they adjust the spine to help to restore normal function to the central nervous system.

Though there is not a one size fits all remedy for every baby, it is in your baby’s best interest to try an alternative route first.  When you make your appointment for your baby the chiropractor will conduct a thorough examination and determine if  chiropractic will be a good treatment for them. They will then prescribe a course of treatment to help you and your baby get  the rest that you both deserve.

A CASE STUDY: A study was done by Dr. Joyce Miller and her colleagues at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in the U.K. on chiropractic and pediatrics. Their findings came after researching hundreds of children receiving chiropractic care. Their findings include in the area of colic and chiropractic; that out of the 43 infants younger than 8 weeks of age received 2 weeks of chiropractic care, and after 2 and 4 weeks of receiving care the infants cried less and slept significantly better than before they received care.2
